I’m personally not a consumer of this particular category of Lakme products but when I purchased a bottle of Lakme True Wear Nail Colour on a whim, I expected only good things.

And why wouldn’t I? Lakme is a cosmetics brand every Indian woman is familiar and has grown up with. Even after the entry of international brands, Lakme still hasn’t lost its trustworthy appeal, purely because of its consistent presence in the market, its chain of beauty salons and its ability to cater to a vast segment of Indian women with different tastes. Its popularity can be judged by the fact that it, without fail, appears on all kinds of Most Trusted surveys of Indian brands, the most recent being The Brand Trust Report 2011 where it was ranked at No. 47.

It’s a brand so trusted that even big names in the world of fashion and Bollywood are willing to attach their names to its products. As I say in the video, several shades in the Lakme True Wear Nail Colour line are endorsed by prominent fashion designers. The one I picked up – the Classics No.12 JJ Valaya – is a shade of dusk-rose pink with a hint of glitter. Very elegant.

But this product has glaring flaws. The heaviness of the lacquer weighs down the nails and the product’s chip-resistant claim – as I show in the video – just doesn’t hold. Add to that a really, really flimsy bottle cap which you would certainly not expect from a Unilever brand.

At Rs.90 for 9ml, I would never return to such a clumsy product, even though the other shades in this line are pretty and have Sabyasachi, Manish Malhotra and Malini Ramani endorsing them.
