Low Light Test: Canon 7D with Canon EF-S 18-135 mm kit lens Real Reviews November 29, 2012 Cameras & Accessories views: 6480 This video was shot with the Canon 7D, for the large part with the 7D kit lens, the Canon EF-S 18-135 mm. In some sections, we also shot with the Canon EF-S18-55 mm, and the Canon EF 50 mm prime, to highlight the difference. We reached BKC (Bandra Kurla Complex) section around 6.15 pm when the light was fading fast; the Canon EF-S 18-135 mm gave us pretty good results for evening light between 6:15 pm – just before sunset – and 7:45 pm, way after sundown. And on zooming in to 135 mm – the birds in flight – at 5.6 f stop, the light did not change significantly. Later at the busy Lucky signal at Bandra, we switched to the Canon EF-S 18-55 mm, which gave us a delightful soft bokeh of floating headlights and taillights. And we kept the lens for shooting the paan stall below the skywalk there. There was a drop in quality with this lens when compared to the EF-S 18-135 mm. At the Mahim Dargah food street that was lit with halogens and tube lights late at 10:30 pm, we switched between all three lenses. Here the Canon EF 50 mm prime gave us stellar results when stopped down to 3.5 and ISO as high as 1250. The crispness of footage – the sizzling chicken legs – is starkly superior to that taken with the other two lenses. For more footage shot with the 50 mm, see our earlier video here. At around 11 pm, we drove down to a section of the Dadar beach that is faintly lit by a distant streetlight, with the Bandra-Worli Sea Link and the Mumbai skyline in front. Even at the extended maximum ISO of 12800, the light proved too low for the 18-55 mm and the 18-135 mm lenses. Here again, the 50mm shone, even though there is high noise in the footage shot at 2.5 f stop and ISO12800. Verdict: The 7D kit lens fares well when there is decent amount of ambient light. But in extreme situations, like a dark alley, or a candlelit room, it’s worth carrying 50 mm in your bag.
